For our August meeting we focused on direction finding.  Charles (KE6QZU) talked about the various uses for direction finding both in the Amateur Radio world as well as how it is used by Public Safety and a variety of other people.  He then reviewed the various methods of shielding to assist in locating a transmitter.  The favorite of the group had to be body shielding, not necessarily because of how well it works, but the visual you get as a bystander with a room of people all twirling in circles.  We first tried to identify the location of the club repeater (447.900) using the various methods that Charles talked about.  After that we set out to find a hidden transmitter in the community center that Charles had planted prior to the meeting.  We all started out in the room twirling in circles and using various tin foil shields.  We all fairly quickly realized that the transmitter was not in the room and started to head down the halls.  Oh the looks we received as we all were twirling down the hall, radio in hand and tinfoil in tote.  We were all able to locate the transmitter which was hidden in a flower pot.

Next month our in-person meeting is scheduled to be at City Hall and NOT the Daybreak Community Center.  We are planning on taking a tour of City Hall and the EOC and will hopefully be getting an overview of the Police Department.  Please keep an eye on your email and this site, for up to date meeting information, just in case there are any changes.  There are also two other events in September we are helping out with.  The first is the Wasatch 100 on Friday September 10th and Saturday the 11th.  Our very own Ed Sim (N7RTA) is running communications at the Brighton aid station and could use some additional help.  If you are interested in helping out please contact Ed for additional details.  On September 25th the first annual SoJo Marathon will happen and we are still in need of volunteers to assist with communication at various aid-stations in the city.  If you are interested in helping out, contact Brett (KC7IIB) or sign into the site and volunteer via the entry in the calendar (CLICK HERE).  We are also reaching outside of the club via the ARPSE.org website for additional volunteers to assist.  If you are available for either the Wasatch 100 or the SoJo Marathon, please consider helping out.

Last night we held our July in-person meeting at the Daybreak Community Center.  Brett (KC7IIB) started off by thanking everybody that helped with the South Jordan Half Marathon and explained that it was a great success.  He also mentioned two other events that we have been ask to help support:  August 20th (Night out Against Crime) & September 25th (Lifetime Fitness Marathon).  Please click the link to get more information and to volunteer for these events.

Our main topic of the evening was Mobile Radio Installation.  We had ask JJ (KE7GHK) to join us and talk about his experiences installing radios professionally and to also show off his personal truck install.  After looking over a few installations (Brett's KC7IIB & Ed's N7RTA) in the parking lot we headed inside for a Q&A session.  During the Q&A we talked about how best to tap into power for our radios and discussed a few way to penetrate a vehicles firewall.  One of the quick tips, was to spray the cables with Windex to help them slide through the holes a bit better.

Charles (KE7QZU) briefly showed off some battery chargers he has recently located and Brett (KF7JAU) mentioned that he was planning on bringing some batteries to our next meeting to give away.  Charles also gave a quick demo of the ARRL TravelPlus software for helping to map out repeaters while traveling.  We also briefly talked about what we call the "Hong Kong Special", otherwise know as "Wouxun KG-UVD1P dual band FM handheld radio" which is an inexpensive option for a handheld dual band radio.  The link here takes you to the US distributor but you should also look at ebay as the price tends to include a few more accessories.

Our next in-person meeting is scheduled for August 26th and we are planning on talking about Radio Direction Finding.  Also in August we will be plaining a club pot-luck for members and their families, so please watch your email and this site for more details.

Last night we had the May in-person meeting, held as usual at the Daybreak Community Center.  We started off by doing a quick overview of the club website and all of the changes that have been implemented over the last year.  We then moved on and talked about the Incident Command System (ICS).  As part of our involvement with the City of South Jordan, they have identified specific courses that  all OLRC members are encouraged to take.  Those courses are identified in the presentation that is available HERE.

After ICS we started talking about Public Safety Radios and how to use them in relation to the upcoming (June 18 & 19) Country Fest.  We are looking for several volunteers to assist with Country Fest and we were also ask to staff the first annual South Jordan Half Marathon on July 10th.  There are a variety of positions available for both of these events and people interested should contact Brett Neilson (KC7IIB) or register to help on ARPSE.org.

Our next in-person meeting will be held June 24th and we will be talking about Repeaters.  We will also be scheduling a mountain top repeater site visit and will plan to go one evening during the week, or on a Saturday.

Lat night we held our April in-person meeting.  It was another one of the ever popular Build-It-Nights and we made 2 meter roll-up J-Poles.  This time, the club footed the bill for each of the project kits.  All total, we ended up building about 9 antennas.  A special thanks to Charles (KE6QZU) for working on the plans and getting all of the supplies.  We have posted the plans in the documentation section on the site in case anybody wants to make another one, or one for a different band.  Also a special welcome to Jeremiah Whittle (KF7IXS) a new ham and member of our club.  Welcome to the group Jeremiah!

Our next in-person meeting will be May 27th and we will be talking about our involvement in Country Fest and the Incident Command System.
